| Warkworth,
on the eastern coast of Northumberland, is the perfect example
of a location for a self-catering, sightseeing holiday. Warkworth
is a historic village just minutes from the coast. The Castle,
the Norman bridge, the Church, and the Hermitage are just
examples of the things to see in the village. Warkworth Castle
overlooks the village and is a must see for anyone visiting
Northumberland. Built in different stages between the 12th
and 15th century, the Castle is a grand example of medieval
construction. Warkworth’s proximity to the coast allows
for summer days on the beach when you’ve seen all that
you want of Warkworth’s history.

Warkworth’s central location makes visiting more of what
Northumberland has to offer very easy. Joining the National
Trust or English Heritage will allow free access to many of
Britain’s historical sights and is highly recommended.
Less than an hour’s drive from Warkworth is Hadrian’s
Wall, an ancient defensive wall built by the Romans that stretches
across England. There are many points of interest worth visiting
along the Wall, even walking along the Wall is nice on a warm
summer’s day. For people less interested in the history
of Northumberland, Newcastle is a short trip south of Warkworth
and well worth seeing. Newcastle is a finalist for the European
City of Culture for 2008. There are plenty of museums, shops,
and other modern architecture worth visiting in Newcastle.
There is much to see and do around Warkworth
and the rest of Northumberland. Information about Warkworth
and Northumberland is available from several websites on the
Internet and is worth reading through, just to see the extent
of what Northumberland has to offer. Though many people in
the south of England may see Northumberland as far too distant
to drive to for a holiday, it is well worth the effort. It
is just a day’s drive from most places within Britain.
The drive will allow you and your family to take in the sights
of Britain as you travel. For those not interested in driving,
there are many other coach, train, and plane options available
to get you there. However you get there, making the effort
will be well worth your while. A trip through the English
countryside could be the perfect thing for you this summer. |
